Thermostat Not Working? Causes and Fixes

Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers  ·  Last updated 21 July 2026

A thermostat that’s blank, unresponsive, or not triggering the heating is often a simple battery or settings issue — but it can also be wiring or a failed unit. Here’s how to tell them apart.

Quick answer: The most common cause of a ‘dead’ thermostat is flat batteries — replace them first. If the display works but the heating won’t respond, check it’s set above room temperature and in ‘heating’ mode. Wiring faults and failed units are less common and need an engineer.

Common Causes

Why a thermostat stops working

These are the usual causes, roughly in order. The colour on the left shows whether it’s a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.

Safe Checks

What you can safely check

Safe to check

  • Replace the batteries — the single most common fix
  • Set it above room temperature and confirm it’s in heating mode
  • Re-pair a wireless thermostat with its receiver per the manual
  • Move it away from draughts, lamps or radiators that skew the reading

Leave to an engineer if…

  • The heating ignores the thermostat even with fresh batteries
  • You’d need to touch mains wiring behind the unit
  • A wired or mechanical stat needs replacing

What we usually find

Nine times out of ten a ‘broken’ thermostat just needs batteries or a nudge above room temperature. When the heating genuinely ignores the stat, it’s usually lost pairing on a wireless model or a wiring fault on a wired one — both quick for an engineer. If you’re upgrading, we can fit and pair a smart thermostat too.

FAQs

Thermostat problems — your questions answered

Almost always flat batteries. Replace them first — it’s the most common cause of an unresponsive thermostat. If it stays blank with fresh batteries, it may need replacing.

Check it’s set above the current room temperature and in heating mode. If it’s calling for heat and nothing happens, the issue may be pairing (wireless) or wiring (wired) — an engineer can confirm.

Each model differs, but it usually involves putting the receiver into pairing mode and following the thermostat’s menu. Fresh batteries help. Your manual has the exact steps.

Yes. If it’s badly placed — near a draught, lamp or radiator — it can misread the room and switch the heating on and off too often. Relocating it usually helps.

Smart thermostats give better control and can trim bills with schedules and app control. We can supply, fit and pair one — see our smart thermostat guide for the options.

Thermostat playing up? We’ll sort it.

Book an engineer to check the wiring or fit a new thermostat, or call for a quick steer on what to try first.
