Heating Problems
Heating Comes On Then Goes Off? Causes and Fixes
Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers · Last updated 21 July 2026
If the heating fires up then shuts down after a short while — or cycles on and off — it’s usually the thermostat, the boiler short-cycling, or a circulation problem. Here’s how to narrow it down.

Quick answer: Heating that comes on then goes off is often the thermostat reaching its set temperature too quickly (poor placement or a low setting), or the boiler short-cycling due to low pressure, air or sludge. Check the thermostat and the pressure first.
Common Causes
Why the heating won’t stay on
These are the usual causes, roughly in order. The colour on the left shows whether it’s a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.
| What happens | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Heats briefly then stops | Thermostat set too low or badly placed | Raise the setting; move the stat away from heat sources |
| Rapid on/off cycling | Boiler short-cycling (pressure or air) | Check pressure ~1.3 bar; bleed the radiators |
| Off once one room is warm | Single stat, unbalanced system | Balance the radiators and bleed any cold ones |
| Cuts out when it gets hot | Overheat from sludge or poor flow | A powerflush may be needed; book an engineer |
| Stops in cold weather | Frozen condensate pipe | Thaw the external pipe, then reset |
| Random on/off | Thermostat or PCB fault | Needs an engineer to diagnose |
Safe Checks
What you can safely check
Safe to check
- Raise the thermostat and move it away from lamps, draughts or radiators
- Check the pressure gauge reads around 1.3 bar
- Bleed radiators to clear trapped air that causes short-cycling
- Balance the radiator valves so no single room satisfies the stat too soon
Stop and call us if…
- The boiler or pipes get very hot before it cuts out
- You can smell gas — leave the property and call 0800 111 999
- It keeps locking out after a single reset
Engineer Insight
What we usually find
If the heating comes on then quickly stops, it’s usually the thermostat satisfying too soon — a low setting or a stat sitting in a warm spot. True short-cycling (rapid on/off) is more often low pressure, air or sludge making the boiler overheat and back off. We check the easy causes before touching the boiler.

FAQs
Heating cycling on and off — your questions answered
Why does my heating turn off after a few minutes?
Usually the thermostat has reached its set temperature — often because it’s set low or sitting somewhere warm. Raising it or moving it typically fixes it. Short-cycling from low pressure or sludge is the other common cause.
What is boiler short-cycling?
It’s when the boiler fires and shuts off repeatedly without properly heating. It wastes gas and wears the boiler. Common triggers are low pressure, trapped air, or sludge restricting flow.
Can thermostat placement cause this?
Yes. A thermostat near a radiator, lamp or sunny window reads warmer than the room, so it satisfies early and switches the heating off. Relocating it to a neutral spot helps.
Could low pressure make the heating cut out?
Yes. If pressure drops too low the boiler backs off or locks out. Top up to about 1.3 bar with the filling loop and see if it settles.
When should I call an engineer?
If the basics (thermostat, pressure, bleeding) don’t settle it, or the boiler overheats before cutting out, book a Gas Safe engineer to check for sludge, a failing sensor or a PCB fault.
