Low Hot Water Pressure? Causes and Fixes

Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers  ·  Last updated 22 July 2026

Weak hot water at the taps is usually scale narrowing the boiler’s waterways, a partly-closed valve, or low incoming mains pressure. The quickest clue: if cold water is weak too, it’s a mains issue; if only the hot side is weak, it’s usually the boiler or scale.

Quick answer: Start by comparing hot and cold flow at the same tap. If both are weak, it’s a mains or stopcock issue on the plumbing side. If only the hot is weak, it’s usually scale narrowing the boiler’s heat exchanger, or a partly-closed isolation valve — both fixable.

Common Causes

Why hot water pressure is low

These are the usual causes. The colour on the left shows whether it’s a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.

Safe Checks

What you can safely check

Safe to check

  • Compare the hot and cold flow at the same tap
  • Check the main stopcock is fully open
  • Check and clean the aerator on the affected tap
  • Note whether it’s one tap or the whole house

Book an engineer if…

  • Only the hot water is weak (points to scale in the boiler)
  • Flow has dropped gradually over months or years
  • Weak flow comes with lukewarm water — a scaled exchanger

What we usually find

The first thing we check is whether cold water is affected too. If both are weak, it’s a mains or stopcock issue on the plumbing side, not the boiler. If only the hot is weak, it’s nearly always scale narrowing the heat exchanger in our hard-water area — a descale restores the flow, and an inhibitor slows it coming back.

FAQs

Low hot water pressure — your questions answered

If cold flow is fine but hot is weak, the restriction is on the hot side — usually scale narrowing the boiler’s heat exchanger, or a partly-closed hot isolation valve. A descale or valve check restores it.

Scale builds up inside the heat exchanger’s narrow waterways, reducing the space water can flow through — so hot flow drops and the water heats less well. Descaling clears it.

No — if both are weak, the boiler isn’t the cause. It’s usually a partly-closed stopcock or low mains pressure. Check the stopcock is fully open; if the whole street is affected, contact your water supplier.

Yes — if the boiler is undersized for the property’s demand, or the exchanger is scaled, hot flow suffers, especially when more than one tap runs. An engineer can advise on descaling or sizing.

Open the stopcock fully, clean tap aerators, and keep the boiler descaled. If it’s a sizing issue, we can advise on the best route for your property — sometimes a different boiler or an unvented cylinder.

Weak hot water? We’ll get the flow back.

Book a Gas Safe engineer to descale the exchanger or check the valves, or call and tell us whether it’s one tap or the whole house — we’ll point you the right way first.
