Hot Water
Hot Water Takes a Long Time to Heat Up? Causes and Fixes
Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers · Last updated 21 July 2026
Waiting an age for hot water is usually the distance from boiler to tap, scale in the heat exchanger, a partly-stuck diverter, or — on cylinder systems — a tired immersion or thermostat. Here’s how to tell what’s slowing it down.

Quick answer: A short delay is normal on a combi — it heats on demand, and the water sitting in a long pipe run has to clear first. A longer wait, or water that never gets properly hot, usually means scale in the heat exchanger, a partly-stuck diverter, or (on cylinders) a tired immersion or low thermostat setting.
Common Causes
Why hot water is slow
These are the usual causes. The colour on the left shows whether it’s a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Long wait at a far tap | Distance from boiler to tap | Normal to a point; insulate the pipe run to hold heat |
| Slow and never very hot | Scale on the heat exchanger | A descale or powerflush helps; book an engineer |
| Cylinder slow to reheat | Immersion or cylinder thermostat | Check the thermostat setting; test the immersion |
| Weak flow and slow | Low incoming pressure or scale | Check the flow at the tap; an engineer can descale |
| Combi slow between uses | Normal on-demand delay | Use a preheat/eco setting if your boiler has one |
| Got slower over months | Gradual scale build-up | Book a descale or powerflush |
Safe Checks
What you can safely check
Safe to check
- Whether it’s just the furthest taps (a distance issue, not a fault)
- The cylinder thermostat is set to about 60°C (stored systems)
- Any preheat or ‘eco’ hot-water setting on a combi
- Insulate long, exposed hot-water pipe runs to hold the heat
Book an engineer if…
- The water never gets properly hot, however long you wait
- Flow and heat have both dropped over time (likely scale)
- A stored cylinder won’t reheat even with the immersion on

What we usually find
In hard-water parts of North London, scale on the heat exchanger is the usual reason hot water gets slow and lukewarm over time — it insulates the exchanger so it can’t transfer heat efficiently. A descale or flush restores it. If it’s always been slow at one tap, that’s just distance, and pipe insulation is the practical fix.

FAQs
Slow hot water — your questions answered
Why does my hot water take so long?
A short delay is normal — cold water in the pipe has to clear first, and combis heat on demand. A long wait or lukewarm water usually means scale in the heat exchanger, a partly-stuck diverter, or a cylinder thermostat set too low.
Is it normal for a combi to be slow to run hot?
A few seconds’ delay is normal, especially at taps far from the boiler. Insulating the pipe run helps. If it’s much slower than it used to be, scale is the likely cause.
Can limescale slow my hot water?
Yes — scale coats the heat exchanger and stops it transferring heat efficiently, so water heats slowly and never gets as hot. A descale or powerflush restores performance, and an inhibitor helps prevent it returning.
My cylinder is slow to reheat — why?
Usually the cylinder thermostat is set low, or the immersion or coil is tired. Set the thermostat to about 60°C and test the immersion; if it still won’t reheat, we can diagnose it.
How can I get hot water faster?
Insulate long hot-water pipe runs, set the cylinder thermostat correctly, use any preheat setting on a combi, and keep the system descaled. We can advise on the best option for your setup.
