I Can Smell Gas — What Do I Do Right Now?

Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers  ·  Last updated 22 July 2026

If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. It’s a free 24/7 service and the correct first call — not us or any other engineer. The steps below are what to do while you wait, or before you call if you’re somewhere safe to read this first.

Quick answer: don’t touch any electrical switches, put out naked flames, open doors and windows, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 once you’re safely outside. Don’t go back in until you’re told it’s safe.

Step By Step

What to do immediately

  1. Do not turn any electrical switches on or off, including light switches, and don’t use your mobile phone inside the property — a spark can ignite gas.
  2. Turn off the gas supply at the meter if you can safely reach it, usually via a lever turned 90 degrees.
  3. Open doors and windows to ventilate the property as you leave.
  4. Put out any naked flames like candles or cigarettes.
  5. Leave the property and get to a safe distance.
  6. Call 0800 111 999 once you’re outside and safe, not from inside the property.
  7. Do not go back in until you’ve been told it’s safe to do so.

After the gas emergency service has attended

The National Gas Emergency Service will make the situation safe, which may mean isolating an appliance or the supply. Once they’ve confirmed it’s safe, you’ll need a Gas Safe registered engineer to identify the actual cause and carry out any repair before the appliance or supply can be used again — a separate step from the emergency response itself, and the point where we can help.

FAQs

Gas leaks — your questions answered

Natural gas is odourless in its raw form, but suppliers add a distinctive sulphurous smell, often compared to rotten eggs, specifically so leaks can be detected. Any hint of this smell should be treated seriously.

Yes — 0800 111 999 is a free number available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for reporting suspected gas leaks or smelling gas.

Yes — always err on the side of caution and call. It’s far better to report a false alarm than to ignore a genuine leak.

Follow the general emergency steps first (ventilate, don’t use switches, leave and call from outside) rather than approaching the boiler directly, since the source of the smell may not be confirmed until professionals attend.

A gas leak has a detectable smell; carbon monoxide has no smell, no colour and no taste, which is why CO alarms are essential and why the warning signs are physical symptoms rather than anything you can smell. See our separate Carbon Monoxide guide.

Yes — once the National Gas Emergency Service or a Gas Safe engineer has made the situation safe and identified the cause, reconnection and any repair needs to be carried out by a qualified professional before normal use resumes.

Yes — if it’s safe and quick to do so on your way out, letting immediate neighbours know is sensible, particularly in a shared building where gas supply or pipework may be connected. Prioritise your own safe evacuation first, and mention it to the National Gas Emergency Service when you call, since they can advise on wider building safety.

Treat an intermittent smell with the same seriousness as a constant one. A leak that only becomes noticeable occasionally — perhaps under certain conditions like wind direction or appliance use — is still a genuine leak and should be reported to 0800 111 999 rather than waiting to see if it becomes more persistent.

Once it's confirmed safe, we can help
