Boiler Making Noise? Banging, Kettling and Gurgling Explained

Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers  ·  Last updated 21 July 2026

Every boiler makes some sound, but a new bang, rumble or whistle usually has a cause worth knowing. Here’s what each noise typically means, what you can safely try, and when it’s time to call us.

Quick answer: Kettling (a rumble like a kettle) usually means limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger. Banging and gurgling point to trapped air or poor circulation — often fixed by bleeding radiators. Humming or vibrating is usually the pump. Most noises are fixable and worth sorting before they get worse.

Common Causes

What each boiler noise means

Match the sound to the likely cause below. The colour on the left shows whether it’s usually a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.

The noiseLikely causeWhat to do
Kettling / rumblingLimescale or sludge on the heat exchangerA powerflush usually clears it; book an engineer
GurglingTrapped air in the systemBleed the radiators and check the pressure
Banging on start-upAir or poor circulationBleed the radiators; if it persists, book an engineer
Humming or vibratingPump running too fast or failingAn engineer can adjust or replace the pump
Tapping as pipes heatPipes expanding against joistsUsually harmless; pipes can be clipped or insulated
Whistling near the boilerRestricted flow or scaleNeeds an engineer to check

What you can safely try

Safe to try

  • Bleed the radiators to release trapped air (helps gurgling and knocking)
  • Check the pressure after bleeding and top up to ~1.3 bar
  • Note exactly when the noise happens — on start-up, when hot, or constant
  • Feel whether radiators are cold at the bottom (a sign of sludge)

Stop and call us if…

  • Loud banging comes with the boiler or pipes overheating
  • You notice a burning smell or any scorching
  • You can smell gas — leave the property and call 0800 111 999

What we usually find

Kettling is the noise we’re asked about most. Scale or sludge makes the heat exchanger overheat and ‘boil’ locally, giving that kettle-like rumble. Left alone it shortens the boiler’s life, so a powerflush and an inhibitor top-up is money well spent. Gurgles and knocks, by contrast, are far more often just trapped air.

FAQs

Boiler noises — your questions answered

Usually trapped air or restricted circulation. Bleeding the radiators clears most knocks and bangs. If it continues, it can be a pump or scale issue worth an engineer’s look.

Limescale or sludge builds up on the heat exchanger, causing water to overheat and ‘boil’ — the rumble is like a kettle. A powerflush and inhibitor usually cures it.

Most noises aren’t dangerous, but they signal a problem worth fixing. If a bang comes with overheating, a burning smell or a gas smell, turn it off and call us.

Often yes — gurgling is usually trapped air. Bleed your radiators, then top the pressure back up to about 1.3 bar. If the noise returns quickly, there may be a bigger air or circulation issue.

If the cause is sludge or scale (typically kettling), yes — a powerflush clears the debris and usually restores quiet, efficient running.
