Boiler Keeps Switching Off? Causes and Fixes

Reviewed by our Gas Safe registered engineers  ·  Last updated 21 July 2026

A boiler that fires up then cuts out — or short-cycles on and off — is usually telling you something. Most causes are low pressure, air or a sensor, and several you can check yourself before calling anyone.

Quick answer: If the boiler fires then cuts out within seconds, low pressure is the usual cause — check the gauge and top up to ~1.3 bar. Rapid on/off ‘short-cycling’ more often points to a thermostat, sensor or circulation problem. Overheating shutdowns can mean sludge and may need a powerflush.

Common Causes

Why a boiler keeps switching off

These are the causes we see most, roughly in order. The colour on the left shows whether it’s usually a safe homeowner check or a job for an engineer.

What happensLikely causeWhat to do
Fires then cuts out in secondsLow system pressureRepressurise to ~1.3 bar via the filling loop
Cuts out in cold weatherFrozen condensate pipeThaw the external white pipe, then reset
Rapidly switches on and offThermostat or sensor faultCheck the thermostat position and batteries; if fine, book an engineer

Safe Checks

What you can check yourself

Safe to check

  • The pressure gauge reads around 1.3 bar (top up if low)
  • The external condensate pipe hasn’t frozen
  • The room thermostat is set correctly and its batteries are fresh
  • Radiators are warming evenly — cold spots suggest trapped air

Stop and call us if…

  • You can smell gas — leave the property and call 0800 111 999
  • The boiler or pipes are getting extremely hot before it cuts out
  • It locks out again straight after a reset

What we usually find

Short-cycling is one of the most common calls we get. Nine times out of ten it’s pressure, or a sticking diverter or sensor, rather than a failed boiler. If radiators are cold at the bottom and the boiler kettles, sludge is the likely culprit and a powerflush usually restores it.

FAQs

Boiler keeps switching off — your questions answered

The most common causes are low pressure, air in the system, a faulty thermostat or sensor, or sludge causing the boiler to overheat and shut down for safety.

Resetting once is fine. If it keeps cutting out, resetting repeatedly won’t fix the cause and can mask a fault — get it checked.

Yes — it’s the single most common cause. If the gauge reads below 1 bar, top up to about 1.3 bar with the filling loop and see if it settles.

It’s when the boiler fires and shuts off in quick succession without properly heating. It wastes gas and wears the boiler, so it’s worth diagnosing — often a sensor, thermostat or circulation issue.

Yes. A sludged system restricts flow, so the boiler overheats and shuts down to protect itself. A powerflush clears the sludge and usually resolves it.

Boiler won’t stay on? Let’s find out why.

Book a Gas Safe engineer to diagnose the shutdowns, or call and describe what’s happening — we’ll give you an honest steer before anyone comes out.
